Ricardo 2.º Michell Villalón’s Field Logs: Exploration and Intervention in the Southern Area of Aysén for its Incorporation Into Chile

The Regional Museum of Aysén holds three field logs belonging to engineer Ricardo II Michell Villalón (1872-1945), a member of the Chilean boundary commissions between 1897 and 1903. In them he recorded the daily progress of the work he carried out during those years, first exploring the Baker, Bravo, and Pascua rivers (48°-49° S), and then opening paths through the Baker river basin to connect the Pacific Ocean with the international border claimed by Chile. Based on an immersive reading of his notes, this article examines Michell’s participation in the exploration and intervention in the southern Aysén region and the role he played in incorporating that territory into the national geographical imagination.

El Museo Regional de Aysén resguarda tres libretas del ingeniero Ricardo 2.º Michell Villalón (1872-1945), integrante de las comisiones de límites chilenas entre 1897 y 1903. En ellas registró el avance diario de las labores que desarrolló durante esos años, primero, explorando los ríos Baker, Bravo y Pascua (48°-49° S), y luego, abriendo un camino en la hoya hidrográfica del Baker para conectar el océano Pacífico con el límite internacional reclamado por Chile. A partir de una lectura inmersiva de sus notas, este artículo examina la participación de Michell en la exploración e intervención de la zona austral de Aysén y el papel que tuvo en la incorporación de dicho territorio al imaginario geográfico nacional.
