Navigation on the Imperial River and the Tragedy of the Motorboat Helvetia in 1948

This work addresses the details of the sinking of the motorboat Helvetia in 1948 based on the case file kept by the Regional Archive of La Araucanía. To contextualise the tragedy, it investigates the state of transport routes in Araucanía between the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, particularly steam navigation along the Imperial River. When examined from a historical perspective, it can be seen that the accident was one of the factors that—together with the tragedy of the steamboat Cautín in the same year, 1948, and the inauguration of the Carahue Bridge in 1949—precipitated the end of navigation on that river, giving way to the primacy of road and rail transport.

Este trabajo aborda los detalles del naufragio de la lancha motor Helvetia en 1948 a partir del expediente del caso que conserva el Archivo Regional de La Araucanía. Para contextualizar la tragedia, se indaga la situación de las vías de transporte en la Araucanía entre fines del siglo XIX y la primera mitad del XX, en especial de la navegación a vapor a lo largo del río Imperial. Al examinarlo bajo una perspectiva histórica, se observa que el accidente fue uno de los factores que –junto con la tragedia del vapor Cautín el mismo año 1948 y la inauguración del puente de Carahue en 1949– precipitó el fin de la navegación por dicho cauce, dando paso a la primacía del transporte caminero y ferroviario.
